Latest Lucid Air Dream Edition Review Proves That It’s Something Very Special

The all-electric Lucid Air may come from an automaker with no prior experience building cars but it has proven itself to be one of the finest electric vehicles on the market.

A bunch of journalists have had the opportunity to drive the Lucid Air over the past couple of months and most recently, the guys from Throttle House in Canada headed to California to put the Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance variant through its paces. They walked away from the review seriously impressed.

Powering this flagship variant of the Lucid Air are two electric motors that combine to produce 1,111 hp. It is the most performance-focused variant of the Air but it still offers a range of 471 miles (758 km). Those who don’t need all 1,111 hp can also purchase the Air Dream Edition in Range guise with 933 hp and 520 miles (837 km) of range.

While testing the electric sedan, Throttle House notes that it feels like a luxury car first which is quite a bold statement considering the phenomenal performance that it offers. The Lucid Air also weighs several hundred pounds more than a Tesla Model S Plaid but despite that, it controls its mass incredibly well and offers up loads of grip and gives the driver heaps of confidence. Unlike the Model S Plaid, it also has a set of brakes that match the insane straight-line performance.

The Lucid Air has received a lot of praise recently and was even named as Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. Unlike some other electric vehicles, it has also started to reach the hands of customers and proves that while Tesla continues to dominate the EV market, it now has some serious rivals to worry about.

This V8 M3-Powered BMW “1M” Coupe Is An Affordable Alternative To The Genuine Article

The BMW 1M is considered one of the carmaker’s finest performance models ever. This example, though, is not exactly what it seems.

When it was in production, the 1M was sold exclusively with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. The owner of this car obviously wanted some extra grunt and has replaced the standard engine with the S65 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 of an E92 M3 that delivers 414 hp (420 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lbft) of torque.

Read Also: A Decade Later, The 1M Coupe Remains One Of BMW’s Finest Creations

Coupled to this engine is a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. Obviously, the new engine makes this 1M much faster than a normal one but does it handle as well?

This is one of the questions that Drivetribe had when it arranged a drive of the car. Within 5 minutes, the reviewer notes that the extra weight of the V8 doesn’t upset the handling balance in the slightest and that it continues to perform superbly.

As impressive as this car is, however, it isn’t actually a genuine 1M. Instead, this particular car started out life as a standard 1-Series that has then been upgraded with the M3’s drivetrain. Those living in the UK can buy a car just like this from a local builder for around £30,000 (~$40,000), and that includes the price of a donor 1-Series, the M3 powertrain, and all the labor needed to make it work. This is roughly half the price of a well-maintained, genuine 1M you’ll find on the used car market. Sounds like a good deal to us.

Tesla Model S Plaid Needs 15 Seconds To Run Quarter Mile In ‘Chill’ Mode

<!––>

<!––>

The Tesla Model S Plaid has been in the headlines a lot in recent months and has established itself as the world’s quickest production car this side of the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista hypercars.

Importantly, virtually all performance tests you’ll see online of the Model S Plaid show it being driven in Plaid mode with the available Drag Strip Mode system enabled. Eager to see how his Model S would perform in the more relaxed ‘Chill’ and ‘Sport’ driving modes, YouTuber DragTimes headed onto the street for some tests.

Read Also: Tesla To Add $20,000 Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit Option For Model S Plaid

For the first test, he set a baseline with Plaid mode and Drag Strip Mode enabled, rocketing to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.42 seconds and running the quarter-mile in 9.52 seconds at 148.58 mph (239.1 km/h). He then switched the EV into Sport mode. Doing so saw the 0-60 mph time climb to 3.51 seconds while the car then needed 11.14 seconds to run the quarter-mile with a trap speed of 129.36 mph (208.18 km/h). That’s still a quick quarter-mile time and just a few couple tenths behind a BMW M5 CS.

As for the ‘Chill’ mode, well it is exactly that. After pinning the throttle in this mode, the YouTuber is immediately amused with how much slower it is. It picks up speed very gently and ultimately needs a full 7.13 seconds to hit 60 mph and completes the quarter-mile in 15.27 seconds at just 93.81 mph (150.97 km/h).

2022 Honda Civic Type R Takes To The Nurburgring In Anger

The forthcoming 2022 Honda Civic Type R has been filmed being pushed to its limits at the Nurburgring and looks very, very quick.

The new Civic Type R promises to be a significant improvement over the outgoing model, a car that has already established itself as the king of front-wheel-drive hot hatches. Honda’s eleventh-generation Civic is based on a new platform that’s stiffer than its predecessor while also having a slightly longer wheelbase and wider rear track. These upgrades alone should have a particularly profound effect on how the new Civic Type R drives.

Read More: 2022 Honda Civic Type R Hits The Nurburgring, Probably Has A Lap Record In Mind

All signs point towards the new car retaining the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the FK8 Civic Type R, albeit slightly modified to deliver a bit more than the curent 306 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). Adding even more horsepower and torque than this is never easy with a front-wheel-drive platform but given how well Honda’s engineers did in eliminating torque steer from the outgoing model, we suspect it can work out ways to add some extra grunt without any downsides.

Throughout this clip, a pair of camouflaged prototypes are shown lapping some of the most difficult sections of the circuit, including the famed ‘mini-Carousel’ where the car briefly jumps into the air, lifting one of its wheels off the pavement.

Honda will no doubt look to set a new production car lap record for a front-wheel-drive performance vehicle around the ‘Ring. The current record was set in April 2019 by the Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R at 7:40.1. If the new Civic Type R can dip below the 7:40 mark, that would be a huge achievement, especially when you consider that the Megane R.S. Trophy-R is a stripped-down variant with front racing seats, no rear seats, and a roll bar.

QOTD: Which Group B Rally Icon Should E-Legend Turn Into An EV Next?

The Audi Sport Quattro-Inspired EL1 electric coupe is one of the most exciting cars we’ve seen this year, and its existence owes nothing to modern day Audi.

Instead, the 30-unit run of retro EVs is the work of another, much smaller company by the name of E-Legend. And according to Autocar, E-Legend plans to follow up the EL1 with more zero emissions homages to 1980s Group B rally icons.

Marcus Holzinger, E-Legend’s chairman and chief designer, suggested to Autocar’s Mike Duff that Lancia’s Delta S4 and 037 and Ford’s RS200 were all cars he would like to reinterpret as EVs, conceding that the running order might be decided by which generates the most demand from buyers.

Kimera Evo37

On its website at the foot of a section about the EL1, E-Legend states that “two more rally icons of the same type, also limited to 30 units, are expected to follow”.

The 037, you might recall, has already been rebooted by another independent company as the 498 hp Kimera Evo37, though that uses conventional ICE running gear rather than electric motors.

While the cars Holzinger mentions share nothing beyond their Group B history, E-Legend says it can produce any of them using a modified version of the carbon fiber monocoque chassis and triple-motor running gear found in the EL1.

Ford RS200

Autocar reports that the architecture is flexible enough to accommodate different wheelbase lengths, and that handling characteristics can be tweaked to mimic those of the original car by switching off the front motor or moving components to change weight distribution.

The 805 hp EL1 is claimed to accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds, has a maximum speed of 186 mph (299 km/h), and costs €890,000 ($1.04 million) plus tax.

Which Group B icon do you think E-Legend should tackle next (we’re guessing not the embarrassingly crappy Citroën BX 4TC)?

Cadillac Won’t Make An Estate Version Of The CT5-V Blackwing, But You Can Have This CTS-V Wagon Instead

As impressive as the new Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is, we think the fact that it isn’t available as a wagon is a pity. Fortunately, anyone wanting a high-performance Cadillac combined with the practicality of a wagon can buy something like this on the used car market.

The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon you’re looking at is a 2013 model and while that means it has some outdated technology compared to the CT5-V Blackwing, it still offers heaps of power. In fact, this particular example has been extensively modified and dyno graphs included in the Bring a Trailer listing confirm it has 781 hp at the rear wheels and 750 lb-ft (1,016 Nm) of torque.

Upgrades made to the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 include an Airaid intake system, American Racing long-tube headers, GM Performance three-bolt cam gear, BTR Stage 3 camshaft, BTR timing chain, BTR valve springs with titanium retainers, BTR trunnion kit, a D3 Crank-mount boost pulley kit, Innovators West lower balance, new spark plug wires, ported throttle body, aftermarket fuel pumps, new fuel injectors, and the ability to run on E85.

Watch Also: This Cadillac CTS-V Wagon Is So Powerful And So Fast It Needs A Parachute To Stop

The exterior of the car is clad in Black Diamond Tricoat paint and it has been upgraded with a carbon fiber splitter and carbon hood. It also sits on 20-inch wheels from Vossen with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

As with any CTS-V Wagon, the cabin is comfortable for a family and includes heated and ventilated Recaro front seats clad in Ebony leather. The cabin also features dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, navigation, and a custom Audison audio system with a 1,000-watt amplifier.

The listing confirms the car has only been driven 26,000 miles (~41,800 km) and since Cadillac won’t make a CT5-V Blackwing Wagon, this remains the next best thing.

Ford GT Prices Have Skyrocketed, But What About The Competition?

The Ford GT built between 2004 and 2006 is a blue-chip modern classic. First shown as the GT40 Concept at the 2002 Detroit auto show, the supercharged retro supercar was such a hit deposit cheques were flying around like ticker tape at a presidential parade. Ford quickly agreed to build 4,500 cars, and sock it to Ferrari one more time.

Production began in summer 2004, Ford quoting a theoretical base price of $139,995 excluding destination, though many owners added the stripe pack, McIntosh stereo, red brake calipers and forged BBS wheels, which inflated the sticker to $154,145.

Ford also hiked the price by $10,000 on later cars to cash in on demand, but even so, the 550 hp GT looked like a bargain next to less powerful European rivals costing the same, or more. And 16 years later, that $140-165k Ford wanted for a GT seems even more outrageous value. Because if you tried to buy one today it would cost you more than double.

[embedded content]

Even by supercar standards, GTs tend to have covered very few miles over the years, but we found several cars with between 10,000-25,000 miles for around $330,000. But many appear to have been mothballed by investors and have covered almost no mileage at all. We came across eight cars in the US with under 1000 miles, all advertised at upwards of $400,000.

The situation is even crazier in Europe, which got just 100 cars, including 28 for the UK, where one of those sub-1000 mile box-fresh examples will set you back at least £350,000 ($493,000).

Whatever the mileage, though, and wherever you’re based, it’s safe to say that if you bought a new GT in 2005 or 2006 and managed to hang on to it until today, or least until the mid 2010s, you made one of the shrewder financial moves you’ll ever make.

But if you spent your $150,000 on any number of other big-ticket cars (many with more exotic badges) back in 2005, it would have been a very different story.

Aston Martin DB9 Volante

Take the Aston Martin DB9 Volante. Lauded as one of the world’s most glamorous cars at its launch in 2005, it featured an advanced bonded aluminium chassis and a 6.0-liter, 510 hp V12 that could take it to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.

[embedded content]

It cost $170,000 the year Hurricane Katrina hit, which represented a $15k mark-up on the mechanically similar coupe. But thanks to the devastating effects of depreciation you can pick up a 25k-mile example today for less than $50,000.

Ferrari F430

By the time the first Ford GTs hit dealers Ferrari’s 360 Modena was getting ready to pass the baton to its F430 successor. The older car cost around $158,000 before options when new, and the F430, a touch under $170,000, making both Ferraris more expensive than a GT back in the George Bush years. But neither Italian car has retained as much value.

[embedded content]

Today you’ll pay around $100k for a 360 and $125,000 for a F430 if you pick one with the optional F1 paddleshift transmission. But if you want a six-speed manual (which cost less than the F1 ‘box when new) to match the Ford’s three-pedal setup, the price more than doubles, to $250,000.That’s an impressive price rise, if not quite in Ford GT territory.

Lamborghini Gallardo

And finally, we’ve got the Lamborghini Gallardo. Lambo’s first baby sports car in 15 years was a huge deal, and with all-wheel drive, a V10 instead of Ferrari’s V8, and almost 500 hp, dealers had no trouble parting customers from $167,000.

[embedded content]

Scan the classifieds today though, and you’ll see it’s possible to get into a 25k-mile Gallardo coupe for around $110,000, while there doesn’t appear to be anything like the same kind of price disparity between transmission variants that there is with the Ferrari.

Bentley Continental GT

Bentley’s handsome Continental GT was another exotic making waves in the circa-$150k market that boomed in the early 2000s. Elegant retro lines gave little clue that there was essentially a VW Phaeton sedan hiding underneath, and the twin-turbo W12’s 552 hp and 479 lb ft ensured the miles would melt away.

[embedded content]

As would your $150,000 investment, sadly. Like its Aston DB9 rival, the Conti has tanked on the used market compared with its supercar contemporaries, and you can now grab a 25,000-mile 2005 car for around one third of what it cost new. If you’re feeling brave and aren’t scared of big miles and big bills, you can get them for less then $30k. But as YouTuber Tyler Hoover discovered, it’s not worth the risk.

Lessons For 2021

Hindsight is, of course, a handy thing, but what does this all mean for the 99.9 per cent of us who didn’t have $150,000 to blow on any of these cars back on 2005 and certainly can’t stretch to $350,000 for a Ford GT today? Maybe that we should have worked harder in school. Or maybe that a V12 Aston Martin for the price of a basic BMW 3-series sounds like a pretty appealing prospect – but first make sure you can live with its running costs, or you might regret it.

2022 Nissan Note Aura Nismo Has Bold Looks And Real Downforce

After being teased last week, the 2022 Nissan Note Aura Nismo has been officially unveiled before sales of it kick off in Japan this year.

Immediately making the Note Aura Nismo stand out from the regular model is a design that takes inspiration from Nissan’s Formula E race car. As such, the front end features an identifiable Nismo splitter finished in red. The car has also been equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, red mirror caps, red side skirts, and an aggressive rear fascia that includes a distinctive bumper and diffuser package.

Alterations continue into the cabin and include bucket seats with seat covers made from a combination of fabric and synthetic leather. The seats also have an embroidered Nismo logo and red/grey contrast stitching.

Continuing to power the Note Aura Nismo is the same e-Power system as the regular model, combining a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine acting as a generator and a pair of electric motors to drive the wheels. It produces 134 hp and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque. The Nismo variant comes equipped with three drive mode settings, including a Nismo mode that provides better response and improved acceleration while Normal Mode and Eco Mode have been specially tuned for this model and provide more comfortable driving.

Nissan says that the Note Aura Nismo’s unique exterior looks also add downforce, resulting in improved stability at high speeds. The car also features a unique suspension setup to provide better handling.

The Japanese automaker hasn’t announced any other details regarding the Note Aura Nismo, including how much it will cost.

Audi’s Sky Sphere Concept Transforms From Sports Car To Autonomous Lounge, Will Launch On August 10

Audi announced today that it will unveil its luxurious Sky Sphere concept on August 10 at its design studio in Malibu, California.

In a video published on YouTube today, the brand’s design boss, Marc Lichte, and its vice president, Henrik Wenders, announced the unveiling and teased the concept, that is expected to preview the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation electric platform, codenamed Project Artemis.

In the video, Lichte describes the Sky Sphere concept as a “sports transformation vehicle” and calls driving autonomously the pinnacle of luxury.

[embedded content]

“This concept car is, on one hand, a real sports car, and it can transform in only a few seconds into an autonomous lounge,” says Lichte, before Wenders jumps in to describe how it will feature connected services we “sometimes cannot even imagine yet.”

Teaser images of the concept car show a low, sleek, long-hooded car that the video’s hosts say was inspired by the Horsch 853A, seen in the video. Like the classic car, a darkened shot of the Sky Sphere suggests that it will be a convertible, which makes sense given the name.

The Sky Sphere is part of a trio of concepts that Audi announced earlier this month: the Sky Sphere, the Grand Sphere, and the Urban Sphere. Although details on the third model remain scant, Lichte did say that the Grand Sphere will be a take the place of the luxurious A8 in the lineup.

“I asked our design teams not for their vision of an A8 successor but for something completely new. [Sales] volumes for three-box saloons such as the A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class are going down, and there are new, more attractive body styles,” Lichte told Autocar. “Honestly, I think the S-Class has been a lot more successful than our A8, so we have to come up with something completely new to attack the S-Class.”

Based on the next-gen Project Artemis electric platform, these concepts will be our most up-to-date peek at what Audi is planning for its next-gen electric vehicles. Although we don’t yet know how much range the automaker is expecting out of its upcoming platform, the Audi Aicon, the brand’s last futuristic concept, was estimated to get between 700-800 km (434-497 miles).

Audi has already said that it will be revealing all three of “Sphere” concepts in the next 12 months.

Unlocking A Car Door Is Surprisingly Easy Thanks To A Lishi Lock Pick

Although automotive keys tend to look more complicated than, say, a house key, it turns out that the concept behind their operation is pretty similar. Thanks to a specialized tool called a Lishi lock pick, car doors can be unlocked pretty easily.

That’s the conclusion of an ongoing series of videos from The LockPickingLawyer, whose website has started selling the tools. Essentially, they combine a pry bar and the pick along with a little graph to help you decode the lock.

In a video from May, the host of the channel called these picks a game-changer, while locksmiths on the Lishi website provide testimonials for how easy they make unlocking car doors. That’s because the tools are made specifically for certain locks and mimic the shape of the key to push aside the dust cover and other things that might get in a lock picker’s way.

Read Also: Lock Your Cars: Thieves Taking Advantage Of Coronavirus Lockdown

[embedded content]

The result is that the host could unlock the doors of a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, a 2018 Nissan Maxima, and a 2013 BMW 3-Series within seconds. In the video introducing the Lishi locks, the Lockpicking Lawyer relates how a selection of people with no lockpicking experience were able to pick common door locks and padlocks with ease.

[embedded content]

It’s all a little unsettling and culminates in the host picking the lock of his own car, a Ford Explorer ST. Just like in the previous videos, the lock was easily picked in a matter of seconds. Fortunately, the car’s alarm sounded and the host was alerted to the break in in seconds through his phone. While that’s reassuring, I’m not sure how secure I think any valuables in my car are anymore.

Although the host points out that these lockpicks would make gaining access to the car easy (a blessing if you lock your keys in your car, a bit of a concern that anyone can just buy these, though), they can’t start a car because they don’t have the requisite chip. So that’s a relief, I guess. Excuse while I go hide my car and empty it of my belongings, though.
