2022 Toyota Avalon Drops AWD And TRD, Starts From $36,375 For Its Final Year

The fifth-generation Avalon might have been introduced in 2018, but Toyota has confirmed that 2022 will mark the end of its production. Today, the automaker announced pricing for the 2022 MY alongside a few changes in the lineup.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon starts from $36,375 (excluding the $1,025 fee), making it $250 more expensive than last year’s model.

The full-size sedan is not available in AWD variants anymore, while the sporty TRD trim was also dropped from the range. The good news for prospective buyers is the addition of new safety features as standard, including the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ package (dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, etc), and the addition of a rear-seat reminder system.

Just like last year, the Avalon is available with gas and hybrid powertrains. The 3.5-liter V6 produces 301 hp (224 kW / 305 PS) and 267 lb-ft (362 Nm) of torque, mated to an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic gearbox that sends power to the front axle. The hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors producing a combined 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and comes with a fuel economy rating of 44 mpg combined.

The 2022 lineup includes six trim levels, including the XSE Nightshade Edition that is visually differentiated from the glossy black accents, the 19-inch wheels, and the rear diffuser. Inside, variants are differentiated with the base XLE featuring SofTex upholstery and “engineered wood” trim, the Limited coming with perforated leather and genuine wood sourced from Yamaha, and the Touring with perforated SofTex / Ultrasuede and aluminum trim.

Mazda3 And CX-30 Get Mild Updates In Japan Including New Special Editions

After the Mazda CX-3 Super Edgy, the automaker announced a series of special trim levels of the Mazda3 and the CX-30 in Japan, alongside small updates on the e-SkyActiv X motor.

Those include tweaking the intake port and exhaust silencer of the gasoline engine to produce a richer sound for spicing up the driving experience during acceleration. Additionally, engineers have updated the gas pedal feel for a greater “sense of unity with the car”. As a refresher, the e-SkyActiv X is a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque.

In terms of the new trim levels, the Smart Edition is available for models equipped with the e-Skyactiv X engine. It brings more comfort and safety equipment including an active driving display, smart brake support, high beam control system, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Meanwhile the Black Tone Edition, which is available for all powertrain variants of both models, is visually differentiated by the black 18-inch aluminum wheels, the gloss-black mirrors, and the red stitching inside the cabin.

The pictured Mazda CX-30 Black Tone Edition is fitted with optional aero components including the bumper and side-sill extensions.

Following the example of the more recent CX-30, all Mazda3 models get a new dimming turn signal which, according to Mazda, gives “a sense of life” in the car. Last but not least, the Platinum Quartz Metallic is a new color option for the Mazda3 and the CX-30, while the Polymetal Gray Metallic is added to the palette of the Mazda3 Sedan.

Orders for the mildly updated Mazda3 and CX-30 are open in Japan as of today, with vehicles arriving in dealerships in late November.

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Breaks Cover With 2+2 Seats, Fabric Top, AWD And Up To 577 HP

The millionaires’ Miata is back! Mercedes has overhauled the iconic SL roadster for only the seventh time in the model’s almost 70-year career, and this one takes on some seismic changes including standard all-wheel drive and the return of 2+2 seating after a three-decade absence.

Sometimes when automakers say a car is new, the fresh content that justifies that tag is limited to the bumpers at either end. But the SL really is new from the ground up, built on a new multi-material platform made from aluminum, steel, magnesium, and composites that it will eventually share with the next AMG GT coupe.

Measuring 185.2-inches (4705 mm) long and 106.3-inches (2700 mm) between the axles the new SL is 2.9-inches (74 mm) longer and rides on a wheelbase stretched 4.5-inches (115 mm) over the previous SL’s. It’s also 6-inches (154 mm) longer than the old AMG GT Roadster, which the SL sends to an early grave, remedying the previously bizarre situation where Mercedes had two different two-seat V8 convertible sports cars covering similar market turf.

Two Cars In One

[embedded content]

The new SL does the job of both and gets a subtle but significant name change to mark the promotion. Every version is now called Mercedes-AMG SL and comes with the AMG-specific Panamericana toothy grille to reflect that that legendary two-seater is now part of the AMG family.

Related: 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 Spied Almost Undisguised

And, for now, at least, every version has an engine worthy of that badge. Additional powertrain options will be added in time, including a PHEV and probably a mild-hybrid V6, but from launch, the choice is limited to a pair of M177 4.0-liter V8s you’ll recognize from other AMGs, with their two turbos once again nestled in the vee.

Choose From Two V8s, Or Wait For The PHEV

The entry-level SL 55 makes 470 hp and 516 lb-ft, while the punchier SL 63 ups those numbers to 577 hp and 590 lb-ft thanks to more turbo boost, improved airflow, and a software tweak. Even the base car can hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, but the SL 63 cuts that down to 3.6 seconds, and we’d expect the PHEV to go even harder if it borrows its hardware from the 831-hp AMG GT 63 E 4dr unveiled this September’s Munich show. Find a suitably empty stretch of derestricted autobahn and the SL 55 will top out at 183 mph, leaving the SL 63 to romp ahead to 196 mph.

Whichever of the two V8s you go for, power is channeled through Mercedes-AMG’s nine-speed automatic transmission which swaps a torque converter for a wet clutch pack that should make the SL rev faster and feel more responsive to a stab on the gas. And from there, for the first time ever in an SL, the power is sent to all four wheels, both models getting a 4Matic+ tag.

Modern five-link front suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, and rear-wheel steering also come standard on both 55 and 63, the back wheels doing the usual trick of turning the opposite way to the fronts at slow speed (though in this case up to 62mph, so not that slow) and the same way at higher speeds. But the SL 63 asserts its superiority with air suspension and active roll control; the SL 55, which you can spot by its red, rather than yellow brake calipers, makes do with conventional steel coils.

More Space, Lighter Fabric Roof

Other significant changes include the addition of two small rear seats that will accommodate bodies up to 4 ft 11-inches (1.5 m), effectively limiting them to children and Snow White’s crew, and a switch from a retractable hardtop back to a triple-layer fabric convertible top.

Ditching the retractable roof concept lowers the center of gravity and is worth a 46 lbs (21 kg) saving, and it saves on trunk space when folded, too. Mercedes claims you can fit two golf bags in the trunk even with the tops down. You struggled to get much more than a golf club in older SLs when the sun was shining.

Related: A Brief Look Back At The History Of The Mercedes-Benz SL

[embedded content]

And when the sun does break out from behind the clouds, you’ll be feeling those rays faster than before. The new roof cycles from open to closed in 15 seconds, a 5-second reduction, and can be operated at speeds of up to 37 mph. Benz’s Airscarf system that pumps warm air out of the front seat headrests comes standard ‘on eight-cylinder models’, says Mercedes, hinting that the range will be extended to include less powerful, less luxurious six-cylinder models later.

Whether those entry-level cars will drop in wheel size from the 19-inchers that feature on the SL 55 remains to be seen, but there will be plenty of options to upsize, either to the same 20-inch diameter rolling stock fitted to the SL 63, or bigger again, to 21 inches.

An SL With Attitude

Predictably, it’s the twenty-ones you can see in the pictures, and they do a great job of filling the SL’s swollen fenders. Visually, the 2022 SL has more in common with the outgoing AMG GT Roadster than it does with the dated, bland SL it replaces. The plus-two seating gives it a less cab-backward look than the Roadster, and the triangular LED headlights add some extra aggression to the face, but anyone looking to trade in a Roadster will feel right at home here.

Related: The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Was An Ergonomic Nightmare But An Engineering Dream

AMG GT 4 Door owners, meanwhile, might recognize echoes of their car in the styling of the rear end, which comes standard with an automatically adjusting five-position spoiler to keep the tail glued to the ground. And if you want to make the nose equally sticky, you can option an Aerodynamics Package that includes visible bumper winglets, just like a race car’s, and an electronically adjustable carbon spoiler below the nose that extends by 1.6-inches (40 mm) at higher speeds, providing a venturi effect and cutting front axle lift by 110 lbs (50 kg) at 155 mph.

Hit The Track In Comfort

Contrast that almost invisible technology with the very visible tech inside the cabin. Mercedes opted not to deploy its full triple-display Hyperscreen dashboard as seen in the EQS sedan, choosing a more classically sporty design for the SL’s interior. And it decided against giving the SL the full suite of its latest autonomous technology we saw on the 2021 S-class, though it does have the usual steering assistance and automatic braking systems you’d expect from an expensive Mercedes.

But with an adjustable S-Class-style tablet on the console running Benz’s latest MBUX infotainment package, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display, the 2022 SL is a car that tries to carefully tread the line between sports car and luxury car, hoping it can keep both camps happy. Do you think Mercedes managed it?

The New Bentley Continental GT Speed Will Happily Drift On Demand

Bentley has invited UK media for a first go in their new Continental GT Speed at Silverstone, releasing at the same time all the technical details of the “most dynamic road-going Bentley ever made” and a new image gallery.

In addition to packing more firepower, the new Continental GT Speed is the first to feature a rear-steering system, as well as the first Bentley with a rear electronically-controlled limited-slip differential.

Read More: The New 650 HP Bentley Continental GT Speed Is A Country Gent’s GT-R

The result, according to Bentley, is not only a more agile super GT but one that can actually drift itself out of a corner. The newly calibrated Sport drive mode limits the available to the front axle to 28 percent and almost shuts off the counter-oversteer torque applied in the Comfort and Bentley drive modes.

In addition, the new Continental GT Speed can be optioned with the largest car brakes in the world, featuring 440 mm carbon discs at the front with giant 10-piston calipers. Bentley says that their latest-generation carbon brakes save 77 lbs (35 kg) of unsprung mass and are exceptionally fade resistant.

Under the bonnet, you’ll find Bentley’s familiar twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine, which has been upgraded to 650 HP (659 PS), up from the regular model’s 626 HP (635 PS). Torque remains the same, rated at a colossal 664 lb-ft (900 Nm). Moreover, the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission can change gears in half the time of the standard Conti GT when in Sport mode.

As a result, the new Continental GT Speed can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds) and reach a top speed of 208 mph (335 km/h).

New 2022 Genesis G70 Starts From $38,570, Lower Than Its German And Japanese Rivals

Genesis announced the pricing details of the redesigned 2022 G70 sedan, which can be now ordered from the carmaker’s website.

Prices for the 2022 G70 start from $38,570, including a $1,045 freight charge, in base 2.0T Standard RWD trim level. Customers can spec all-wheel-drive for an extra $2,100.

That’s notably less than the German premium competition, with Audi charging at least $40,145 for the base A4 2.0T, BMW asking $42,895 for the entry 330i and Mercedes, $42,650 for the C300, with all prices mentioned here including destination. Even Lexus’ IS 300 begins higher at $40,500. However, it’s good to remember that pricing of a new vehicle is one thing, and re-sale value is another. It remains to be seen how the G70 will fare in this regard down the road.

The 2022 G70 2.0T will be offered in Standard and Prestige trim levels while the V6-powered models will be available in the Sport Advanced, Sport Prestige, and Launch Edition grades.

As it’s traditional for Genesis, the updated 2022 G70 will offer a comprehensive range of features as standard, including free scheduled maintenance with Service Valet, Genesis Connected Services, map updates, and more, for 3 years or 60,000 miles.

The 2022 G70 features along list of standard equipment, including a new 10.25-inch infotainment system with Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lights all around, power-adjustable and heated seats, an acoustic windshield, as well as a wide range of driver-assistance systems that includes Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Highway Driving Assist, among other.

Go for the 3.3-liter V6-powered version and you’ll get the Performance Brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, variable-ratio steering, leather upholstery instead of leatherette, and more. The 3.3T Sport Prestige adds a Brembo braking system, a limited-slip differential, electronically controlled suspension and Nappa leather upholstery.

As for the range-topping $53,545 Launch Edition, it comes with lightweight 19-inch multispoke alloy wheels, a matte paint finish in either Verbier White or Melbourne Gray, and a two-tone Obsidian Black/ Sevilla Red interior.

The new limited edition of the Polestar 1 is introduced just a few months before the carmaker ends its production cycle, which is expected to happen later this year.

“It’s hard to believe that our beautiful halo car comes to the end of its production life later this year,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “We pushed boundaries with this car, not only in terms of engineering but also in its design and execution. Polestar 1 set the tone for our brand and its genes are evident in Polestar 2 – as they will be in our future cars to come.”

The Polestar 1 has one of the most complex plug-in hybrid powertrains in the market, featuring a pair of electric motors, a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine, and a 34 kWh battery pack. The combined output is rated at an impressive 609 HP and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque, while the pure EV range is still the longest of any hybrid model in the market, at 77 miles (124 km) on the WLTP cycle.

The electric motors are mounted in the rear, one for each wheel, offering real torque vectoring while the six-piston brakes are from Akebono, and the suspension features high-end adjustable Öhlins dampers.
